Nags Head is a recreation wonderland that stretches from beneath the sea into the heavens. Whether you’re an amateur or professional adventurer, you’ll discover plenty of choices to satisfy you and the experts and equipment to make your pick a pleasurable and safe one.

Beach Driving
A favorite local activity is cruising the beach when the season allows. In Nags Head, you can take to the sand with your wheels October 1 through April 30. But first you have to get a permit at the town hall. Call (252) 441-5508 for fees.

The suggested speed limit is 15 miles per hour. Enter only at designated ramps. Keep an eye peeled for beachgoers, especially kids and pets who tend to stray! Bear in mind that the wind and water can make a ruckus and impair your hearing and that of pedestrians. Folks also get groggy sunbathing.

Think normal road rules: Pass on the left, keep to the right and yield the right of way to pedestrians. Vehicles and drivers must be street legal — this includes wearing seat belts. If you are in the back of a truck, remain seated in the bed only. Jeep passengers have to remain seated as well. Open alcohol containers are not allowed.

Prepare your tires for the adventure by letting out the appropriate amount of air (and making sure you add it back when you leave the beach!). Pull out of the access way and deflate your tires leaving 20 pounds of pressure. While on the beach keep to the firm, wet section below the high tide line following in already-made tracks. Watch out for shelly, red sand and depressions with standing water. Always stay clear of dunes, and keep a look out for prohibited areas such as nesting sites. Remember to drive behind those folks who are surf fishing!

Biking & Skating
Bicyclists and skaters are a common site trekking along the town's multiuse path, which runs along the Beach Road from MP 10 (around Bainbridge Street) to MP 21 (Old Oregon Inlet Road in South Nags Head). The path is for walking, jogging, bicycling and skating. The town designates this path as a tow-away, no parking zone for non-motorized activity only. Visitors can bring their own bikes and skates or rent them while here along with necessary safety helmets. The state law requires that helmets be worn by those younger than 16 (including passengers) while riding on public roads or right-of-ways. It's important to keep on the designated path and not navigate on the Beach Road or the Bypass. Those roads are just too busy, and in the case of the Beach Road, too narrow to be safe - especially for children. There are plenty of side roads to navigate, but watch out for sightseers, blowing sand that can thwart your vision and sandy patches that can cause you to skid. Ride on the right side of the road in single file only. Cross at stoplights, and don't forget your hand signals. One rider per bike is a good rule of thumb. Night riding is not recommended, but if it's necessary, use a front-lighted white lamp and rear red reflector. The Town of Nags Head requests that folks using in-line skates, roller-skates or skate boards confine their use to the multiuse path only.

Rent "wheels" of all kinds here by the day, weekend or week. They have beach cruisers and tandem bikes, even kiddie carts that attach behind bikes so the whole family can go for a ride. Hit the bike path with your little one in a jogger or canopy stroller (they have single and double joggers). Ocean Atlantic Rentals also leases other recreational equipment like kayaks and gear for surfing as well as baby necessities of all kinds. If you forgot it, or simply couldn't fit it in the car, they probably have it and can deliver it right to you!

The YMCA's skatepark has a cement bowl, ramps and a street section. The park is open to skateboards, rollerblades, bikes and scooters. Youth 12 and younger must have a parent present to skate. Youth 17 and younger must wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads. Only helmets are required for those 18 and older. There's a fee for the use of the park, which is discounted for Y members, Nags Head and North Carolina residents. Out-of-state visitors pay $10 a day or $30 a week to use the park. You can also include the skatepark in your vacation on the Outer Banks by staying in a participating Y-Home or Y-Tel (vacation rentals managed by the YMCA) or by purchasing a Weekly Flex Pass.

Enhance your vacation with a dolphin or sunset cruise adventure brought to you by the Nags Head Dolphin Watch. These folks promote Atlantic bottlenose dolphin research through their commercial operation and offer two-hour dolphin trips. Naturalists explain coastal ecology and area history during sound excursions aboard a 40-foot pontoon boat with canopy cover. The boat carries 36 passengers, is handicap-accessible and has a bathroom. Drinks are sold, or provide your own in a small cooler. Reservations are necessary for the trips, which depart three times a day. They usually book up for the entire week by Monday. Trips generally are scheduled May through September. A sunset Manteo harbor cruise is also offered in the summer featuring a history commentary. Ask about their private charters too.

Nags Head Dolphin Watch asks that you report dead or stranded whales, dolphins, porpoises or seals as soon as possible to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) North Carolina Marine Mammal Stranding Network at (919) 728-8762.

Hiking can be a good opportunity to do some birdwatching, and the Outer Banks is often referred to as a birder's paradise. Within the town of Nags Head there are good areas for birding, such as Nags Head Woods and Jockey's Ridge State Park. Both sites have information available on the types of birds you're likely to see. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, an excellent spot for birding, is a short drive away.

A good place to start is Outer Banks Birdwatchers (see our Nags Head Shopping page). The owners, Skip and Linda Morgan, are avid birders themselves and can provide helpful tips on birding in the area. They track recent sightings at their shop and carry optic equipment. They can even arrange private tours.

Wings over Water is an annual festival, held in November, that is devoted to the natural side of the Outer Banks. It’s a fun and educational event, with nature-oriented field trips, seminars and kayak excursions. It’s so popular there is now Spring Wings, held in May, which focuses on butterflies and migratory shorebirds. You can call (252) 441-8144 for more information.

While the entrance to the preserve is in Kill Devil Hills, its boundaries stretch into Nags Head. This maritime forest is a true wonder in its wildlife diversity. Ancient oaks exist in the woods as well as 19th-century cemeteries. Five miles of trails thread through the coastal habitat. Please note that this is a very fragile environment, so staying on the trails is necessary to preserve this exquisite forest. They are open every day from dawn until dusk for foot traffic only; dogs and bikes are not allowed on the trails. Check in at the visitor's center before you begin your hike.

Enter the state park through the visitor’s center and choose from three adventures: Hike up the impressive dune, or travel two nature trails that meander through the dune. The Soundside Nature Trail takes about 45 minutes, and the Tracks in the Sand Trail is a 1.5-mile walk.

The park is located on Barnes Street. Turn west off the Bypass at Ace Hardware. The entrance to the Nags Head Town Trail is located just south of the parking lot. Part of the Nags Head Woods Preserve, the trail is a .8 mile hike through the varying landscapes of sand dunes and maritime forest with a turn-around at a quiet sound beach. The town park is available for public use. You can reserve the space by calling the Town Manager's Office. A clean-up deposit is required.

As the Outer Banks is poised on the edge of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, this dive shop takes full advantage of the numerous diving opportunities to "Dive into History" as they like to say. From April to November, they offer guided wreck dives off the beach to the USS Huron. Offshore charters to other wrecks such as the Advance, U-85, the Benson and the Jackson are available all year long, so long as the weather cooperates, and during the summer months they run on a set schedule. Coastal Kayak offers trips to five different areas of the Outer Banks: Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary (between Corolla and Duck), Kitty Hawk Woods, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hatteras Island and two different tours in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on the Dare County mainland. Tours last two to three hours. The guides offer kayaking instruction if you need it, plus they narrate about the local history and ecology along the way. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Children are welcome, as long as they are at least 30 pounds, but certain trips are better for kids than others. Reservations are required.

Surfing
The Nags Head Pier area is one of the local choices for surfing, as is the beach around MP 13. Keep in mind that you have to stay 300 feet from any fishing pier. A leash must connect the surfer's ankle or wrist to the board at all times. Local radio stations give regular surf reports. One of the oldest surf shops on the Outer Banks, Cavalier is a family-run operation and known for providing good customer service in sales and rentals. You can buy or rent hard or soft-top surfboards, body boards, skim boards and wetsuits. They also offer private or group surfing lessons. Lessons last either one or two hours and include surfboard rental. The lessons focus on safety and surfing etiquette. They are a great way to get started if you've never surfed or an opportunity for more experienced surfers to hone specific skills. They rent BZ soft boards, a great board for beginners. Surf lessons are held throughout the summer; call ahead to register. The three-hour lesson begins at the shop with instruction, and then you'll head to the beach. The surf instructors are experienced, local surfers who keep the emphasis on the student. Kill Devil Hills outdoor recreation opportunities are alive and well. The town's great beaches host surfers, kayakers and anglers.

If you've never surfed, you can rent equipment and even take surfing lessons while you're here. For anglers, you'll find all the gear and bait you need in local tackle shops. You'll also get advice on where to go to catch what's biting. Stop in before you head to the beach or pier.

For kids, there are playgrounds, go-carts and mini-golf courses when you need a break from the beach. The whole family can enjoy biking. If you didn't bring bicycles along with you, you can rent them for the whole family from bike or rental shops. Below we've given a few bike routes and some tips on safe biking in town.

Come to the KDH Cooperative for Kids Craft Workshops. These are fun and informative art classes created especially for kids. Each student will bring home his or her own creation at the end of the workshop. Call for more information and to register in advance. Stop in the gallery even if a workshop isn't going on while you're here. You can view some great local artwork and see the Artist's Attic, the upstairs workspaces for the gallery artists.

Kill Devil Hills is a great town for biking. Along the Beach Road, the shoulder of the road has been widened to help link bikers in KDH to the Nags Head multi-purpose path. The path runs alongside the Beach Road beginning at Milepost 10.

The best place to bike in town, however, is on the soundside. Begin at First Street at Milepost 7.5. If you must cross the Bypass, there is a crosswalk and pedestrian signal at First Street, but keep alert for vehicles, especially those in the turning lanes. First Street takes you into a quiet, soundside neighborhood. Turn right on Canal, which connects to Bay Drive, which runs along the sound for a few miles. From Bay Drive you can ride into Kitty Hawk by way of a new portion of the Wright Brothers Bikeway, a paved road that is not accessible to vehicular traffic.

This bike path is one of the prettiest places to ride on the Outer Banks, with great sound views. From here you can connect to Kitty Hawk Road. A paved multi-purpose path runs along most of Kitty Hawk Road. A bike path runs along a portion of Colington Road, beginning at the Bypass and continuing beside the Wright Brothers' Monument, and turns onto First Street. You can also turn off this bike path to the First Flight schools and playgrounds, the Kill Devil Hills library and Town Park and the Outer Banks Arboretum and Teaching Garden.

A word of caution about crossing the Bypass: In the busy summer months, traffic can be heavy. The intersection of the Bypass and Colington Road can be particularly hectic. Seek an alternative to crossing the Bypass here on your bicycle. While there is a crosswalk and pedestrian signal, you still need to exercise lots of caution in this particular spot. Keep on the lookout for turning cars whose drivers may not be looking out for you.

You haven't seen the Outer Banks until you've seen it from the water, and Coastal Kayak can take you there. They offer trips to five different areas of the Outer Banks: Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary (between Corolla and Duck), Kitty Hawk Woods, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hatteras Island and two different tours in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on the Dare County mainland. Tours last two to three hours. The guides offer kayaking instruction if you need it, plus they narrate about the local history and ecology along the way. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Children are welcome, as long as they are at least 30 pounds, but certain trips are better for kids than others. Reservations are required.

The County Family Recreation Park is located on Mustian Street. To get there, turn west off the Bypass onto Colington Road, then turn left onto Mustian Street. The park is located beside the Kill Devil Hills Water Plant.

The Kill Devil Hills Town Park is located by the Town Hall, also off Colington Road, west of the Bypass. The Town Park includes a path that is ideal for biking, walking and rollerblading, playground equipment and a roller hockey rink.

The Pit is a great place to check out if you surf or would like to start. They sell and rent equipment for surfing, skate boarding, skim boarding and body boarding. They have a huge selection of surfboards and specialize in providing the right boards for beginners -- boards that are wide, stable and easy to ride. The sales staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. Want to get started surfing but you're not sure how? They offer surfing lessons. The lesson lasts an hour and a half and is open to all ages and skill levels. The Pit also offers a two-day surf camp that runs three hours a day and is open to beginning and intermediate surfers ages 10 and older. In the summer, you can rent surf and skim boards at Coastal Edge Surf Shop. The shop also sells surf, skim, skate and body boards in the shop. They place skateboard ramps in the parking lot for riders (helmets are required, which you can rent in the shop).

There are public tennis courts at MP 6 on the Bypass by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department. Additional courts are located at MP 8.5. Turn off the Bypass onto Colington Road and take a left on Mustian Street. The tennis courts are beside the Kill Devil Hills library and the town's Water Plant.

Kitty Hawk is a haven for those who love watersports. From fishing and boating to kayaking and parasailing, there is a lot of action here.

If you'd like to relax (this is vacation, after all) enjoy a yoga class or a massage. Bike rides can be fun for the whole family. No need to pack your bicycles; you can rent them from a local bike or rental shop once you get here. For more family fun, take the kids for a round of mini-golf. Biking in Kitty Hawk
Kitty Hawk is an excellent town for biking. Along the Woods Road and Kitty Hawk Road you'll find the Pruitt Multi-Use Trail, a paved path that is separate from the roadway and is ideal for biking, walking or rollerblading. To extend your ride into neighboring Kill Devil Hills, turn off of Kitty Hawk Road onto Moore Shore Road to connect to Bay Drive, a quiet road that follows the sound through a mostly residential neighborhood.

Kitty Hawk Woods 8K Race - June 14, 2008
The Carolina Estuarine Reserve Foundation hosts this 8K race. The scenic course winds through Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve, a rare maritime deciduous forest. Race proceeds go to the Carolina Estuarine Reserve Foundation, a nonprofit organization that strives to protect our coastal ecosystems by supporting coastal research, education and conservation. The Kitty Hawk Fire Fighters Association, which assists in conducting the race, also receives a portion of the proceeds.
