Shopping in Kitty Hawk is an experience, not just something to do on a rainy day. Everyone can find something special with the choices of locally owned and interesting shops in town. Whether you’re looking for homemade dog biscuits, local artwork, funky clothing and accessories, beach souvenirs or fishing tackle, you can find it all within Kitty Hawk. Note that, as you enter the Outer Banks from the north over the bridge from Currituck, all the shops on the right-hand side of the road (the side with the Home Depot) are in Kitty Hawk, while those on the left are in Southern Shores. Remember that locals call Croatan Highway—aka U.S. Highway 158—The Bypass, and they refer to Virginia Dare Trail—aka N.C. Highway 12—as the Beach Road. Those simple names are just easier to remember!

Brew Thru, the original drive-thru convenience store, has become an Outer Banks tradition over the past 30 years. They offer ice-cold beer, wine, beverages, snacks and much more! A vacation to the Outer Banks would not be complete without one of their legendary annual T-shirts. Having sold more than 3 million shirts since 1977, the Brew Thru T-shirt is a collectible and is the #1 selling souvenir on the beach.

Cottage Chic specializes in reinvented furnishings. Whether you’re looking for something unique for your home or you want to give new life to one of your old pieces, Cottage Chic is the place for fun and eclectic home furnishings. “Don’t trash it, let us reinvent it,” says the owner, who can magically transform pieces with a tremendous variety of paint colors and finishes for inside or outdoors. They love custom orders, and they’ll do trades as well. If you need it and can’t find it, they will make it. And if you don’t know what to do with your unwanted home furnishings, consider dropping them here. They’ll re-do it for you or find a home for it with someone else.

Gray’s has been a trusted name in apparel for the whole family since 1948. This family owned and operated local chain boasts the largest selection of Tommy Bahama clothing on the Outer Banks and also sells popular brands like Under Armour, Champion, Gear For Sports, Billabong, Fresh Produce Sportswear, Eliza B. sandals, Olukai Sandals, Leatherman belts and Columbia. Gray’s also carries a great selection of gifts, jewelry and accessories, including Vera Bradley and Brighton Jewelry. You’ll find many names you’ll recognize in jeans, tops, pants and dressy outfits including French Dressing, Alberto Makali, BKG, Vanilia, Andrea Lieu, Foxcroft and Lauren Vidal. Miss Lizzie’s has an array of accessories including shoes, handbags and scarves plus gifts. “Fashion for the fun of it” is their motto.

The Wine Specialist is, obviously, a wine shop. They offer a huge variety of high- and low-end wines from around the world that all meet the high standards of the owners, who have more than 38 years of experience in the wine industry. In addition to wine, they offer a great selection of beers, gourmet cheeses, pates, sausages, locally made chocolates and locally painted glassware. With a minimum purchase of $25, you can get free delivery from Manteo to Duck. Every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. there are free wine and cheese tastings, and Saturday the wine tastings are free all day! They offer a 15% case discount and 10% on 6 bottles. You can place a keg order and have it delivered for free anywhere from Duck to Manteo. Special wedding discounts are available as well as gift baskets, gift cards and wine accessories.

A bit of a change from the traditional surf/skate shop, this shop has more of a boutique feel with clean aesthetics and a simple, modern, minimalist style. Their concept is to bring together the best part of street wear and the best part of surf and skate retail to create a unique experience here on the Outer Banks, and they have succeeded. They research and offer emerging brands you won’t often find on the Outer Banks or even eastern Carolina, so if you like cutting edge style, this is your place. You’ll also find a huge skate, bodyboard and surfboard selection, and they offer two-week turnaround on custom surfboards and 24-hour surfboard ding repair. They also offer full rental and lesson services in skate and surf. And right next door is the only indoor skate park on the OBX, with a 20-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall halfpipe with a 10-foot vert wall. Active in the community, they sponsor skate contests year round.

In North Carolina, all liquor and spirits other than beer and wine are sold at package stores by the name of ABC Stores. Beer and wine are sold at grocery and convenience stores. This store is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It’s closed on Sundays.

Betsy and Brewster have a great little antique store filled with an eclectic collection of antiques, furniture, objects d’art and other cool stuff — like their stuffed peacock.
