Fine-art photographer Matthew S. Gibson specializes in scenic landscape photography of the Outer Banks. He shows and sells his work at his gallery in Nags Head, which is in the famous Gallery Row section of town. In the summer and fall, Gibson offers weekly wine and cheese tastings in the gallery on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a great time to talk with Gibson about his work. Gibson also operates the Outer Banks Photography School, offering a wide range of classes from single-day introductions to week-long intensives. A great new addition to the Outer Banks, this fun toy store is dedicated to finding creative, fun and high-quality toys that you won’t find anywhere else. Their play room gives kids some hands-on time with a train set, doll house and kitchen while also giving parents time to shop or chat. The store is packed with cool stuff and has everything from art supplies to stuffed animals, games, jump ropes, puzzles and all the coolest fun and educational toys kids actually want, including the Klutz series. You can also find craft supplies and other items from Alex, Learning Resources and the popular Melissa & Doug line. They offer a huge variety of high- and low-end wines from around the world that all meet the high standards of the owners, who have more than 38 years of experience in the wine industry. In addition to wine, they offer a great selection of beers, gourmet cheeses, pates, sausages, locally made chocolates and locally painted glassware. With a minimum purchase of $25, you can get free delivery from Manteo to Duck. Every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. there are free wine and cheese tastings, and Saturday the wine tastings are free all day! They offer a 15% case discount and 10% on 6 bottles. You can place a keg order and have it delivered for free anywhere from Duck to Manteo. Special wedding discounts are available as well as gift baskets, gift cards and wine accessories.

A bit of a change from the traditional surf/skate shop, this shop has more of a boutique feel with clean aesthetics and a simple, modern, minimalist style. Their concept is to bring together the best part of street wear and the best part of surf and skate retail to create a unique experience here on the Outer Banks, and they have succeeded. They research and offer emerging brands you won’t often find on the Outer Banks or even eastern Carolina, so if you like cutting edge style, this is your place. You’ll also find a huge skate, bodyboard and surfboard selection, and they offer two-week turnaround on custom surfboards and 24-hour surfboard ding repair. They also offer full rental and lesson services in skate and surf. And right next door is the only indoor skate park on the OBX, with a 20-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall halfpipe with a 10-foot vert wall. Active in the community, they sponsor skate contests year round.
