Fish We Catch:

Blue Marlin

The most established marlin fisheries are found along the eastern seaboard and the Gulf Coast of the US, The Bahamas and several other Caribbean Islands, Venzuela, Brazil and Bermuda. Because of their relative rarity, beauty and sporting qualities, marlin are considered one of the most prestigious catches a recreational fisherman can make. Males rarely exceed 350 lbs in weight and females commonly weigh over 1200 lbs. The body is blue-black on top with a silvery white underside. They can rapidly change color and usually appear bright blue when hunting. The bill is long and stout.

White Marlin

The White Marlin is smaller than many other billfish and are found in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a migratory fish that migrates within the seas only. The body is dark blue above and silvery white below, with brown spots on the sides of the white portion. The average White Marlin length is 110 in and maximum weight is approximately 180 lb. The most common range is from 51-83 inches in length.

Sailfish

The Atlantic sailfish is a metallic blue fish with a large sail-like dorsal fin, long and pointed bill. It is darker on the upperparts and lighter on the sides with bluish vertical bars along the flanks; the underparts are silvery white. Tests estimated that they were capable of short sprints of 37 to 55 kilometres per hour. Atlantic sailfish hunt schooling fishes, such as sardines, anchovies and mackerel although they also feed on crustaceans and cephalopods. The Atlantic Sailfish is related to the Marlin.

Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi)

Mahi-mahi are blue-water, open ocean, highly migratory schooling fish found in tropical and subtropical waters. They are swift and acrobatic game fish with striking colors being golden with irridescent greens and blues. Catches average 15-29 lb and any mahi-mahi over 40 lbs. is exceptional. Males are larger than females. They are also known as dorado or dolphin fish.

Big Eye Tuna

The bigeye tuna is an important food fish and highly sought after recreational game fish. In Hawaiian, it is one of two species known as ‘ahi; the other is yellowfin tuna. Bigeye tuna are found in the open waters of all tropical and temperate oceans, but not the Mediterranean Sea. Bigeye tuna vary up to 98 inches in length. Maximum weight probably exceeds 400 pounds with the all-tackle angling record standing at 392 pounds . They are large, deep-bodied, streamlined fish with large heads and eyes. The pectoral fins are very long. Bigeye tuna often spend prolonged periods diving deep below the surface during the daytime, sometimes as deep as 1,600 ft and have been tracked entering water as cold as 41 ° F.

Great Fishing Offshore and Nearshore

Thu, July 14th 2011 - Offshore from Oregon Inlet

Another great day on the water for the fishing fleet today. The Nearshore fleet has great catches of bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. The Edward Thompson family had two boats fishing together and all in the group had a great time. The Offshore fleet day had another slamming day bringing in limits of dolphin, Yellowfin tuna and Wahoo. The anglers fishing aboard the Obsession had the season's first double meatfish grand slam bringing in 2 wahoo, 2 yellowfin and a limit of Dolphin. All of today's anglers enjoyed the catches of yellowfin and it's great to see multiple catches of Wahoo!!
