Getting around Nags Head on the Outer Banks certainly is easier than the railroad paths of old.The main thoroughfare — U.S. Highway 158 — stretches from Kill Devil Hills to the Oregon Inlet Bridge and connects westward to Manteo by the Washington Baum Bridge. The Beach Road, the local name for N.C Hwy. 12, runs parallel to the sea and U.S. Hwy. 158. Town property stretches 36 miles and includes Pond, Horse and Cedar islands, located near the Whalebone intersection of U.S.Hwy.64/264. Threaded in between sound and sea are smaller roads leading mostly to residential areas. You’ll notice that we use mileposts in our addresses. These green milepost signs run along both N.C. Hwy. 12 (the Beach Road) and U.S. Hwy. 158 (the Bypass). For some reason the Beach Road and the Bypass mile markers don’t exactly correspond, but you still can use them to scout locations. Nags Head fits approximately between milepost 10 and milepost 25. A landmark at the north end on the Bypass is the ABC store. On the south end you’ll be at the Oregon Inlet Bridge. |
