If you’d like to relax (this is vacation, after all) enjoy a yoga class or a massage. Bike rides can be fun for the whole family. No need to pack your bicycles; you can rent them from a local bike or rental shop once you get here. For more family fun, take the kids for a round of mini-golf. Anglers will be happy in Kitty Hawk with opportunities to fish from the shore or the sound. Whatever your pleasure, fun and adventure await you in Kitty Hawk.

A bit of a change from the traditional surf/skate shop, this new shop has more of a boutique feel with clean aesthetics and a simple, modern, minimalist style. Their concept is to bring together the best part of street wear and the best part of surf and skate retail to create a unique experience here on the Outer Banks, and they have succeeded. They research and offer emerging brands you won’t often find elsewhere on the Outer Banks or even in eastern Carolina, so if you like cutting edge style, this is your place. You’ll also find a huge skate, body board and surfboard selection, and they offer two-week turnaround on custom surfboards and 24-hour surfboard ding repair. Kitty Hawk is an excellent town for biking. Along the Woods Road and Kitty Hawk Road you’ll find the Pruitt Multi-Use Trail, a paved path that is separate from the roadway and is ideal for biking, walking or rollerblading. To extend your ride into neighboring Kill Devil Hills, turn off of Kitty Hawk Road onto Moore Shore Road to connect to Bay Drive, a quiet road that follows the sound through a mostly residential neighborhood. Visitors can bring their own bikes or rent them while here along with necessary safety helmets. The state law requires that helmets be worn by those younger than 16 (including passengers) while riding on public roads or right-of-ways.

Keith Seal has created a family dojo that offers training in the martial arts as a way of life, encompassing tradition, self-discipline, physical fitness and the search for spirtual enlightenment. Coastal Kayak offers trips to five different areas of the Outer Banks: Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary (between Corolla and Duck), Kitty Hawk Woods, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hatteras Island, and two different tours in the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on the Dare County mainland. Tours last two to three hours. The guides offer kayaking instruction if you need it, plus they narrate about the local history and ecology along the way. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Children are welcome as long as they are at least 30 pounds, but certain trips are better for kids than others. Reservations are required.

Dock of the Bay is a fuel dock and ships store. They have all your boating excursion needs covered with fuel, bait and tackle, wine and beer, snacks, ice and more. They are located at the end of Bob Perry Road, close to the public boat launch.

Enjoy a kayak tour to some of the finest flat-water kayaking destinations on the Outer Banks. Kitty Hawk Kayak and Surf School offers multiple specialty tours across the Outer Banks, including tours in Kitty Hawk Woods, ocean paddling, night paddling on Roanoke Island, Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges and in Corolla. Surf kayak lessons and rentals are also available. Ask about the overnight trips on the Roanoke River and their Coastal Explorer Camps for kids with field trips, surfing lessons and kayaking. The Surf School offers daily lessons and three-day surf camps throughout the summer. Yoga and surf retreats during the fall and spring. All instructors and guides are ACA and NSSIA certified. Kitty Hawk Woods is a unique environment: a maritime forest, swamp and marsh. Totaling 1,877 acres, the Town of Kitty Hawk owns 461 acres with a conservation easement from the state. A diverse array of wildlife is at home in Kitty Hawk Woods. In some areas gray foxes, raccoons and white-tailed deer can be found. In marsh areas, a number of amphibians and reptiles thrive as well as river otter and muskrat. Birders will want to explore the woods for the hawks, wrens, herons and egrets that can be found in the woods and the marsh areas. Hiking trails with interpretive signs are available for day use only and are accessible from the main access points on Eckner Street, Amadas Avenue, Ridge Road and Birch Lane. The reserve office is located at 983 W. Kitty Hawk Road. Please respect this unique natural setting and stay on marked trails while exploring the woods.

Knuckle-up Fitness

Knuckle-up offers an alternative to the standard workout. Here you can take classes in kickboxing for fitness as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. The facility includes a full-size boxing ring. They also have weight and circuit training equipment. For out-of-the-ordinary entertainment, try to catch one of the amazing magic and comedy shows staged by world-renowned magicians Clive Allen & Tracy. OBXtreme Magic is a family-friendly show, and during the summer you can catch it most Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m. at the Outer Banks Music Showcase in Kitty Hawk beginning June 2.

Outer Banks Marathon, Gateway Bank Half-Marathon, Outer Banks 8K & Kelly’s Hospitality Group Fun Run

If you’re a runner or walker, you don’t want to miss this event on a flat course with awesome scenery and the spirited residents of the Outer Banks cheering for you all along the way. On Sunday, November 14, 2010, you can participate in the fifth annual Outer Banks Marathon or the Gateway Bank Half-Marathon. If all that distance at once isn’t your thing, on Saturday, November 13, there’s also an 8K, a 5K and the Kelly’s Hospitality Group 1-mile Fun Run. Participants can even log 25 miles before race day and finish their “marathon” with 1.2 miles that Saturday. The course for the marathon begins in Kitty Hawk, travels on through Kill Devil Hills and around the Wright Memorial, goes through Nags Head and ends on Roanoke Island. The Gateway Bank Half-Marathon begins by Jockey’s Ridge in Nags Head and ends on Roanoke Island. Walkers are welcome, though you have to be prepared to beat the bridge (they close it to traffic around 1:45 p.m.) so there’s no excuse not to be involved. On Saturday there is a great race expo with good loot, food and entertainment. The Pearl is hosting the annual Saturday Night Pasta Party. Outer Banks Music Showcase

The Outer Banks Music Showcase is wholesome entertainment for the whole family—a two-hour variety show featuring live music and comedy. Done in the Branson, Missouri, style, the 12-member cast includes vocalists and a band putting on a live, entertaining show. The musical numbers include a wide range of genres from pop, country and beach music hits from the 50s all the way to the popular songs of today. The regular season show is new every year and runs from May to October. The Christmas show begins in mid-November and runs through December. This year they are also doing a Grand Ole Opry-style show called the Country Music Jamboree as well as productions that feature hypnosis, magic and comedy. Tickets are $21.95 for adults, $6.95 for children 12 and younger and $20.95 for seniors. Ask about group rates for parties of 20 or more.

Outer Banks Yoga & Pilates

Outer Banks Yoga & Pilates is a warm, inviting studio where you can enjoy a multitude of yoga classes from gentle/beginner to vigorous vinyasa, core-strengthening Pilates mat classes, graceful T’ai Chi and a variety of interesting workshops. You can drop in to any of their classes without a reservation, and they have plenty of mats and props available for your use, so don’t worry if you left yours at home. Unwind after your travels with their multi-level Karma Yoga class on Sunday afternoon (karma means it’s by donation). They love to do private classes for individuals or groups either at your rental home, on the beach or at the studio. Plus, their wedding yoga is a great way to relax and de-stress during those hours leading up to your big day. Seascape Golf Links

Seascape is a Scottish links-style golf course located in Kitty Hawk among windswept dunes. Call ahead to reserve a tee time. Rates include a cart and green fee. Look for special rates for afternoon and off-season play. The course features nicely groomed tees and greens. The restaurant, Seascape Bar & Grille, serves breakfast, lunch and snacks. In the pro shop you’ll find gear and golf club rentals. Several tournaments are held at Seascape each year. The course is open year round.

Skate Park at 158

Right next door to 158 Surf & Skate is the only indoor skate park on the OBX, with a 20-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall half-pipe with a 10-foot vert wall. You can become a member or pay to skate each time, plus they offer private lessons for adults and kids. Call to reserve the park for a birthday party or a private crew session with your buds. Active in the community, the owners sponsor skate contests year round.

The Promenade has something for the whole family! They are situated on an amazing soundfront location just as you cross the bridge from Currituck and have equipment for water sports of all kinds. You can rent Jet skis that accommodate up to three riders, sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks and fishing skiffs. They even have windsurfing equipment, and for the adventurous spirits there’s parasailing. Ask about sailing and windsurfing lessons. Additionally there is a great putting green, mini-golf course and a drving range.

Wave Riding Vehicles carries equipment for surfing, body boarding and skim boarding. They also rent surfboards. Locals know this as one of their favorite shops for swimwear and other surf clothing.
