No need to pack your bicycles; you can rent them from a local bike or rental shop once you get here. For more family fun, take the kids for a round of mini-golf. Anglers will be happy in Kitty Hawk with opportunities to fish from the shore or the sound. Whatever your pleasure, fun and adventure await you in Kitty Hawk.

Rent a kayak for paddling in the ocean or sound. Moneysworth rents single and tandem ocean-style kayaks. Stand-up paddleboards and surfboards are also available. Or, if biking is your pleasure, you won’t have to lug your bicycle all the way to the beach on your vacation when you can rent one from Moneysworth. They have bicycles for adults and children, and they even have baby seats and helmets. They offer free delivery right to your rental home.

Avalon Fishing Pier

Avalon Fishing Pier was built in 1958 and is 696 feet long. They offer day, three-day, weekly and seasonal fishing passes, and you can pay a modest fee for sightseeing. Children’s passes are available to kids 12 and younger. The pier is open from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. in the summer months, and in the spring and fall it opens at 6 a.m. and usually closes by midnight. You can buy bait here and rent tackle, and they even give you advice about what you need to catch what’s biting. The pier also features an arcade/game room and snacks foods can be purchased.

Barrier Island Fitness Center is a first-class facility in a tranquil setting in the woods of Kitty Hawk. They offer day and week-long passes. Enjoy the indoor pool and relax in the hot tub or sauna post-workout. The fitness room has free weights and cardio equipment. They offer aerobics classes. Tanning and massage services are available for a fee.

Kitty Hawk is an excellent town for biking. Along the Woods Road and Kitty Hawk Road you’ll find the Pruitt Multi-Use Trail, a paved path that is separate from the roadway and is ideal for biking, walking or rollerblading. To extend your ride into neighboring Kill Devil Hills, turn off of Kitty Hawk Road onto Moore Shore Road to connect to Bay Drive, a quiet road that follows the sound through a mostly residential neighborhood. Visitors can bring their own bikes or rent them while here along with necessary safety helmets. The state law requires that helmets be worn by those younger than 16 (including passengers) while riding on public roads or right-of-ways.

Keith Seal has created a family dojo that offers training in the martial arts as a way of life, encompassing tradition, self-discipline, physical fitness and the search for spiritual enlightenment. Classes for all levels (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) are offered morning and evening for adults and children. In addition to the traditional karate training, this dojo offers a variety of adult conditioning classes.

This unique children’s museum was founded on the idea that the Outer Banks could use an additional place for children to explore, learn and use their natural creativity through play. They work to develop young children’s levels of physical fitness, health and creativity through hands-on learning activities that stimulate intellectual growth and curiosity. The interactive exhibits have Outer Banks themes, and exhibits include a Seek-and-Find Ocean Adventure Exhibit and the Outer Banks Teddy Bear Health Center sponsored by Outer Banks Hospital. They also have the Ace Wonder Wall with latches, switches and plumbing that kids can flip, ring, pull and build on, a fishing boat, lighthouse and a stage for skits and drama. During the off-season they have Science Thursdays that include hands-on learning experiences that teach about such things as digestion, paleontology and the water cycle. They also make worm habitats and watch caterpillars turn into butterflies. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Don’t miss their summer outdoor movie series that plays in Nags Head at the soundfront town space. All movies are family friendly, and it only cost $10 per car! Shows run from mid-May to end of July.

You haven’t seen the Outer Banks until you’ve seen it from the water, and Coastal Kayak can take you there. They offer trips to four different areas of the Outer Banks: Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary (between Corolla and Duck), Kitty Hawk Woods, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hatteras Island and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on the Dare County mainland. The Kitty Hawk Woods trip is the closest to the Nags Head area. Tours last two to three hours. The guides offer kayaking instruction if you need it, plus they narrate about the local history and ecology along the way. Single and tandem kayaks are available. Children are welcome as long they are at least 30 pounds, but certain trips are better for kids than others. Stand-up paddleboard tours are also available. Reservations are required.

Dock of the Bay is a fuel dock and ships store. They have all your boating excursion needs covered with fuel, bait and tackle, wine and beer, snacks, ice and more. They are located at the end of Bob Perry Road, close to the public boat launch.

Enjoy a kayak tour to some of the finest flat-water kayaking destinations on the Outer Banks. Kitty Hawk Kayak and Surf School offers multiple specialty tours across the Outer Banks, including tours in Kitty Hawk Woods, ocean paddling, night paddling on Roanoke Island, Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges and in Corolla. Surf kayak lessons and rentals are also available. Ask about the overnight trips on the Roanoke River and their Coastal Explorer Camps for kids with field trips, surfing lessons and kayaking. The Surf School offers daily lessons, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) lessons and three-day surf camps throughout the summer. And you can experience yoga and surf retreats during the fall and spring. All instructors and guides are ACA and NSSIA certified. The friendly, professional staff promise your entire family will have fun.

Kitty Hawk Woods is a unique environment: a maritime forest, shrub swamp and marsh. Totaling 1,877 acres, the Town of Kitty Hawk owns 461 acres with a conservation easement from the state. A diverse array of wildlife is at home in Kitty Hawk Woods. In some areas gray foxes, raccoons and white-tailed deer can be found. In marsh areas, a number of amphibians and reptiles thrive as well as river otter and muskrat. Birders will want to explore the woods for the hawks, wrens, herons and egrets that can be found in the woods and the marsh areas. Hiking trails with interpretive signs are available for day use only and are accessible from the main access points on Eckner Street, Amadas Avenue (4-wheel-drive recommended), Ridge Road and Birch Lane. Dogs are allowed on leash. The reserve office is located at 983 W. Kitty Hawk Road. Please respect this unique natural setting and stay on marked trails while exploring the woods.

Knuckle-up offers an alternative to the standard workout. Here you can take classes in kickboxing for fitness as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts. The facility includes a full-size boxing ring. They also have weight and circuit training equipment. Outer Banks Jubilee

Outer Banks Jubilee, a live music theater and family entertainment venue in Kitty Hawk, brings a variety of musical genres weekly to Outer Banks audiences, with professional singers and musicians performing tunes from the 1950s to the 1980s and incorporating Elvis, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash as well as more contemporary artists’ work into the shows. The Gospel Show runs one Sunday a month from May through October (with the addition of a couple of Wednesdays in late August); Mondays and Thursdays feature Rewind – A Timeless Musical Production; Tuesday nights showcase the Jubilee Country Opry; on Wednesdays from June 12 through August 14 (except July 3) enjoy the tribute show Portrait of Patsy Cline; Fridays are home to the Bluegrass & Classic Country Show. In addition to the regular weekly offerings, several shows featuring guest headliners are also scheduled, including Lorraine Jordan and Carolina Road in May, Code Blue Bluegrass in June and Rhonda Vincent in October. Whether your tastes run toward bluegrass, country, oldies, pop, rock, beautiful old hymns and good time gospel tunes, family-friendly comedy or even a little magic, you are sure to enjoy a night of entertainment at Outer Banks Jubilee. Outer Banks Yoga & Pilates is a warm, inviting studio where you can enjoy a multitude of yoga classes from gentle/beginner to vigorous vinyasa, core-strengthening Pilates mat classes, graceful T’ai Chi and a variety of interesting workshops. In season they offer an early morning Beach Yoga class once or twice a week. You can drop in to any of their classes without a reservation, and they have plenty of mats and props available for your use, so don’t worry if you left yours at home. Unwind after your travels with their multi-level Karma Yoga class on Sunday afternoon (karma means it’s by donation). They love to do private classes for individuals or groups either at your rental home, on the beach or at the studio. Plus, their wedding yoga is a great way to relax and de-stress during those hours leading up to your big day. Portrait of Patsy Cline / Elizabeth R and Company

Portrait of Patsy Cline is an all-new musical tribute to the legendary country and pop music star who died in a plane crash in 1963. The production showcases 32 of Cline’s most memorable songs with biographical dialog interspersed between numbers. Talented local vocalist Laura Martier shines in the title role and is joined onstage by her band, The Tumbling Humble Weeds who are Muskrat Reems on pedal steel, Skip Hancock on keyboard, Dan Martier on drums, Joe Mapp on guitar, Bill Rea and Mick Vaughn on bass and Charlie Austin on fiddle. Performances of this Elizabeth R and Company production are each Wednesday at Outer Banks Jubilee in Kitty Hawk at 7:30 p.m. from June 12 through August 14 (no show on July 3). The Promenade has something for the whole family! They are situated on an amazing soundfront location just as you cross the bridge from Currituck and have equipment for watersports of all kinds. You can rent Jet skis that accommodate up to three riders, sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks and fishing skiffs. They even have windsurfing equipment, and for the adventurous spirits there’s parasailing. Ask about sailing and windsurfing lessons. Additionally there is a great putting green, mini-golf course and a driving range.

Seascape is a Scottish links-style golf course located in Kitty Hawk among windswept dunes. Call ahead to reserve a tee time. Rates include a cart and green fee. Look for special rates for afternoon and off-season play. The course features nicely groomed tees and greens. The restaurant, Seascape Bar & Grille, serves breakfast, lunch and snacks. In the pro shop you’ll find gear and golf club rentals. Several tournaments are held at Seascape each year. The course is open year round.

They offer surfboard rentals and a full line of surfboard repairs. In clothing, WRV carries top name brands as well as plenty of unusual and hard-to-find labels. The women’s section in particular is full of boutique choices of clothing and accessories. They also have tons of swimwear for women, men and kids. In addition to this location in Kitty Hawk, they also have stores in Virginia Beach, Haleiwa, Hawaii, and now in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. One thing that’s great about this surf shop is the vibe of appreciation for your business.
