Farmdog Surf School

Farmdog Surf School is the place to get NSSIA-certified surf instruction and coaching. Certified instructors include partners Robert Farmer, Aaron West and Joe Sherlock, who offer group surf lessons, Standup Paddleboard (SUP) Eco Tours and Surfing Day Camps for young and old. They are all stoked to give surf instruction to anyone excited to learn. Typical lessons for beginners include learning the lingo, safety and surf etiquette, stance, wave dynamics, paddling, catching and riding. Easy, right? Whether kids and adults are looking to learn the basics or more experienced surfers are looking for help on technique, form and stunts, the Farmdog team is on it! Kitty Hawk Kites and Whalebone Watersports

The Whalebone Watersports location offers dolphin watch tours, kiteboarding, and Jet Ski rentals. In addition, kayak eco-tours and rentals are available, including a moonlight and bioluminescence tour. If you’ve never seen these glowing organisms, you owe yourself this experience!

One of the oldest surf shops on the Outer Banks, Cavalier is a family-run operation and known for providing excellent customer service in sales and rentals. You can buy or rent hard or soft-top surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards and wetsuits. They also offer private or group surfing lessons. Lessons last either one or two hours, include surfboard rental and focus on safety and surfing etiquette. They are a great way to get started if you’ve never surfed or an opportunity for more experienced surfers to hone specific skills. Standup paddleboards and lessons are also offered. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are also available. In the shop, you’ll find lots of surf and sport clothing, sunglasses, sandals and accessories for boys, men and women.

Outer Banks Boarding Co. is a boarder’s paradise with a friendly and knowledgeable staff and a great selection of equipment for surfing, bodyboarding and snow, skate and skimboarding. They rent wetsuits and surfboards of all kinds that are suitable for all skill levels — from the novice soft-top long board to the board for the seasoned pro looking for the newest in surfboard technology. NSSIA-certified surf instruction and coaching is offered with owner/shaper Lynn Shell and pro surfers and team riders Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder. Follow them on Twitter to get their first on the beach surf report everyday. They pride themselves on providing great customer service here. They’ll even let you demo a surfboard, and if you buy it the cost of the rental is applied to the purchase.

For more than 30 years, this shop is an old-time favorite offering custom-made Secret Spot surfboards as well as used boards. Secret Spot has a variety of surfboards and standup paddleboards for rent, and lessons are available. Tikis and hammocks are also for sale. Secret Spot specializes in swimwear for the entire family, including infants. They have a small amount of gear for skateboarding too. Look up to check out their retro collection of surfboards on the ceiling!

Whalebone Surf Shop

For more than 35 years, Whalebone has been one of the top places to shop for surf gear. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect equipment for your needs. They stock surfboards from all the world’s best shapers. You’ll also find skimboards, body boards and fins. If you’ve never surfed before, Whalebone is a good place to start. They rent GSI and INT soft boards, great boards for beginners. Surf lessons are held June 1 through August 31; call ahead to register. The two-hour lesson begins at the shop with instruction, and then you’ll head to the beach. The surf instructors are experienced, local surfers who keep the emphasis on the student. Lessons include all equipment and transportation to the beach. Back at the shop, you’ll find a great selection of swimwear and apparel for the whole family.
