Outer Banks Boarding Co. is a boarder’s paradise with a friendly and knowledgeable staff and a great selection of equipment for surfing, bodyboarding and snow, skate and skimboarding. They rent wetsuits and surfboards of all kinds that are suitable for all skill levels—from the novice soft-top long board to the board for the seasoned pro looking for the newest in surfboard technology. NSSIA-certified surf instruction and coaching is offered with owner Robert Farmer, owner/shaper Lynn Shell and pro surfers and team riders Jesse Hines and Noah Snyder. Follow them on Twitter to get their first on the beach surf report everyday. They pride themselves on providing great customer service here. They’ll even let you demo a surfboard, and if you buy it the cost of the rental is applied to the purchase.

As the Outer Banks is poised on the edge of the Graveyard of the Atlantic, this dive shop takes full advantage of the world class wreck diving opportunities to “Dive into History” as they like to say. From April to November, they offer guided wreck dives off the beach to the USS Huron and triangle wrecks. Offshore charters to other wrecks such as the Advance, U-85, U-701, the Benson, Jackson, Bedloe, Zane Gray and others are available all year long, so long as the weather cooperates. During the summer months they run on a set schedule. Dive masters go with you and serve as guides when necessary. They also offer instruction on all levels, and they are accredited by the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), IANTD, NSS-CDS, DAN and they are a member of the Universal Referral Program. They are able to offer classes from beginning diver courses through the certification needed to become a Technical Instructor Trainer. The center is also a full retail dive shop, and they rent and repair equipment.

The first of its kind on the Outer Banks, Gear Works Laser Tag is unbelievable fun! After strapping on your laser vest and being commissioned your laser gun, you step into a dark, abandoned industrial complex, aware that around every corner an adversary could be lurking, awaiting your arrival, and you’re looking for them as well. It’s an interactive high-tech adventure. You can play by the game or buy unlimited weekly passes. They also have lots of fun events and specials like Friday Night Frenzy, Full Moon Madness and Play Against the Best—playing against the staff. They open at noon on school holidays, and on Friday nights you can play until midnight. They also have WiFi, arcade games and serve snacks like pizza. It’s a great idea for birthday parties and groups outings and a fun way to get a little exercise too!

2011 marks the 6th Annual Outer Banks Marathon, and if you’re a runner or walker, you don’t want to miss this event on a flat course with awesome scenery and the spirited residents of the Outer Banks cheering for you all along the way. The two-day Race EXPO starts the weekend off on Friday, November 11 and is the first stop for participants to pick up their race number and shirt as well as to shop and visit with more than 25 vendors offering race gear and other local treasures. The 6th annual races start Saturday, November 12. The Outer Banks 8K, Buccaneer 5K and the 1-mile Fun Run begin at the First Flight High School track. The ever-popular Buccaneer 5K offers a more challenging distance for graduating one-mile Fun Runners. Then Sunday, November 13th is the Outer Banks Marathon and Half Marathon. Both are along a scenic point-to-point course. The full marathon begins in Kitty Hawk, leading runners along the Sound on Bay Drive, around the Wright Brothers National Memorial, through Nags Head Woods Maritime Forest, past Jockey’s Ridge State Park, over the Washington-Baum Bridge and to the Finish in downtown Manteo on Roanoke Island. The Half Marathon is the latter half of the marathon course and begins in Nags Head, just north of Jockey’s Ridge at 7 a.m. Walkers are welcome to enjoy the course to the finale and the post-race Pirate Jamboree! Beginning at 8 a.m., participants and their family and friends can celebrate in the streets of downtown Manteo with beer, food and live music, compliments of Outer Banks Sporting Events and its gracious sponsors. 100% of the proceeds from this event are shared by two local non-profits: the Dare Education Foundation, working to maximize student potential by providing resources to benefit students and teachers in all Dare County Schools, and the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, providing financial assistance for families in crises. The 650-foot pier is lighted for evening fishing and open 24 hours a day in season. Rent tackle and buy bait here or bring your own. Daily, three-day and weekly passes are available. A new snack bar and grill, Fish Heads, serves up hamburgers, hot dogs, steamed seafood and ice-cold beer (see Restaurants). They offer senior citizen discounts.

Outer Banks Yoga & Pilates is a warm, inviting studio where you can enjoy a multitude of yoga classes from gentle/beginner to vigorous vinyasa, core-strengthening Pilates mat classes, graceful T’ai Chi and a variety of interesting workshops. In season they offer an early morning Beach Yoga class once or twice a week. You can drop in to any of their classes without a reservation, and they have plenty of mats and props available for your use, so don’t worry if you left yours at home. Unwind after your travels with their multi-level Karma Yoga class on Sunday afternoon (karma means it’s by donation). They love to do private classes for individuals or groups either at your rental home, on the beach or at the studio. Plus, their wedding yoga is a great way to relax and de-stress during those hours leading up to your big day. Seascape is a Scottish links-style golf course located in Kitty Hawk among windswept dunes. Call ahead to reserve a tee time. Rates include a cart and green fee. Look for special rates for afternoon and off-season play. The course features nicely groomed tees and greens. The restaurant, Seascape Bar & Grille, serves breakfast, lunch and snacks. In the pro shop you’ll find gear and golf club rentals. Several tournaments are held at Seascape each year. The course is open year round.

This shop is an old-time favorite offering custom-made Secret Spot surfboards as well as used boards. Secret Spot has a variety of surf and boogie boards available for rent, and lessons are available. They have a small amount of gear for skateboarding too. Check out their retro collection of surfboards on the ceiling!

Right next door to 158 Surf & Skate is the only indoor skate park on the OBX, with a 20-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall half-pipe with a 10-foot vert wall. You can become a member or pay to skate each time, plus they offer private lessons for adults and kids. Call to reserve the park for a birthday party or a private crew session with your buds. Active in the community, the owners sponsor skate contests year round.

There are public tennis courts at MP 6 on the Bypass by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department. Additional courts are located at MP 8.5. Turn off the Bypass onto Colington Road and take a left on Mustian Street. The tennis courts are beside the Kill Devil Hills library and the town’s Water Plant.

The Comedy Club of the Outer Bank

The Comedy Club of The Outer Banks is host to some of the most talented stand-up comedians in the nation. This club has been established since 1984 and has hosted such great talents as Ray Romano, Drew Carey and Sinbad when they were plying their trade on the comedy circuit. This is your chance to see nationally touring comedians who you may have heard on XM Satellite Radio or the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom radio show or have seen on shows such as Comedy Central, Showtime, Star Search, Last Comic Standing or on HBO. Regularly scheduled shows are May through September with periodic special events October through April.

The Outdoors Outfitters is a true outfitter specializing in kayak tours for children and adults. They’re located in downtown Manteo but offer activities all over the Outer Banks, including the central beaches of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk. Ask about their children’s activity tours, naturalist-led eco-tours, biolumenescence or full moon tours, sunrise or sunset tours or Your Family Only! tours. For rentals, they offer delivery to anywhere on Roanoke Island, Nags Head, Pea Island or Alligator River, or you can take the kayak on your vehicle. Don’t want to bring all your camping gear but want to camp? The Outdoors Outfitters rents tents, bags, pads, cooking stoves and other camping gear. Also operating out of this storefront is Nags Head Diving (see separate listing) for scuba diving lessons, tours and equipment. The Outdoors Outfitters store sells and rents scuba gear and spearfishing equipment. New this year, The Outdoors Outfitters is offering scuba diving charters, spear-fishing charters and sportfishing charters aboard their 38-foot boat, The Diving Pirate. They also rent bikes for adults and kids (they also have carriers for infants and little tikes) and offer bike tours of Roanoke Island.

The Pit is a great place to check out if you surf or would like to start. Known for their friendly surf school, The Pit has some of the nicest and most knowledgeable surf instructors around. They have a huge selection of surfboards for rent or purchase, and their staff specializes in providing the right boards for beginners—boards that are wide, stable and easy to ride—as well as choosing the right board when you are ready to move up for more performance. Lessons last an hour and a half and are available for all ages and skill levels. And if you’re hungry from all this surfing (and thinking about surfing), check out their Boardriders’ Grill next door for great pizza, wraps, burgers and more!

The Promenade has something for the whole family! They are situated on an amazing soundfront location just as you cross the bridge from Currituck and have equipment for water sports of all kinds. You can rent Jet skis that accommodate up to three riders, sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks and fishing skiffs. They even have windsurfing equipment, and for the adventurous spirits there’s parasailing. Ask about sailing and windsurfing lessons. Additionally there is a great putting green, mini-golf course and a driving range.

Wave Riding Vehicles has been on the beach since 1980, and in that time their wave of porpoises logo has made their surfboards one of the most recognizable on the East Coast. The shop is huge, with equipment for all the board sports: surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding. They offer surfboard rentals and a full line of surfboard repairs. In clothing, WRV carries top name brands as well as plenty of unusual and hard-to-find labels. The women’s section in particular is full of boutique choices of clothing and accessories. They also have tons of swimwear for women, men and kids. In addition to this location in Kitty Hawk, they also have stores in Virginia Beach, Haleiwa, Hawaii, and now in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. One thing that’s great about this surf shop is the vibe of appreciation for your business.
Whalebone Surf Shop

For more than 30 years, Whalebone has been one of the top places to shop for surf gear. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect equipment for your needs. They stock surfboards from all the world’s best shapers. You’ll also find skimboards, bodyboards and fins. If you’ve never surfed before, Whalebone is a good place to start. They rent GSI and INT soft boards, great boards for beginners. Surf lessons are held June 1 through August 31; call ahead to register. The three-hour lesson begins at the shop with instruction, and then you’ll head to the beach. The surf instructors are experienced, local surfers who keep the emphasis on the student. Lessons include all equipment and transportation to the beach. Back at the shop, you’ll find a great selection of swimwear and apparel for the whole family.
Wings Over Water Festival

Wings over Water is an annual six-day festival held in November that is devoted to celebrating the wild side of the Outer Banks. The festival offers nearly 100 programs in themes ranging from birding and wildlife photography to paddling, natural history and more! It’s a fun and educational event for the whole family, and since it takes place in the shoulder season, it’s a very affordable time to come and enjoy the beauty of the Outer Banks.
