Tennis

There are public tennis courts at MP 6 on the Bypass by the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department. Additional courts are located at MP 8.5. Turn off the Bypass onto Colington Road and take a left on Mustian Street. The tennis courts are beside the Kill Devil Hills library and the town’s Water Plant.

The Bike Barn

At the Bike Barn you can rent or purchase bicycles for the whole family. They also perform repairs. To find the Bike Barn, turn off the Bypass by Taco Bell restaurant.

The Pit Surf Shop, Bar and Grill

The Pit is a great place to check out if you surf or would like to start. Known for their friendly surf school, The Pit has some of the nicest and most knowledgeable surf instructors around. They have a huge selection of surfboards for rent or purchase, and their staff specializes in providing the right boards for beginners—boards that are wide, stable and easy to ride—as well as choosing the right board when you are ready to move up for more performance. Lessons last an hour and a half and are available for all ages and skill levels. And if you’re hungry from all this surfing (and thinking about surfing), check out their Boardriders’ Grill next door for great pizza, wraps, burgers and more!

The Promenade Watersports

The Promenade has something for the whole family! They are situated on an amazing soundfront location just as you cross the bridge from Currituck and have equipment for water sports of all kinds. You can rent Jet skis that accommodate up to three riders, sailboats, pontoon boats, kayaks and fishing skiffs. They even have windsurfing equipment, and for the adventurous spirits there’s parasailing. Ask about sailing and windsurfing lessons. Additionally there is a great putting green, mini-golf course and a drving range.

Town Park

The park is located on Barnes Street. Turn west off the Bypass at Ace Hardware. The entrance to the Nags Head Town Trail is located just south of the parking lot. Part of the Nags Head Woods Preserve, the trail is a .8-mile hike through the varying landscapes of sand dunes and maritime forest with a turn-around at a quiet sound beach. The town park is available for public use. You can reserve the space by calling the Town Manager’s Office. A clean-up deposit is required.

Wave Riding Vehicles

Wave Riding Vehicles carries equipment for surfing, body boarding and skim boarding. They also rent surfboards. Locals know this as one of their favorite shops for swimwear and other surf clothing.

Whalebone Surf Shop

For more than 30 years, Whalebone has been one of the top places to shop for surf gear. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable and can help you find the perfect equipment for your needs. They stock surfboards from all the world’s best shapers. You’ll also find skim boards, body boards and fins. If you’ve never surfed before, Whalebone is a good place to start. They rent GSI and INT soft boards, great boards for beginners. Surf lessons are held June 1 through August 31; call ahead to register. The three-hour lesson begins at the shop with instruction, and then you’ll head to the beach. The surf instructors are experienced, local surfers who keep the emphasis on the student. Lessons include all equipment and transportation to the beach. Back at the shop, you’ll find a great selection of swimwear and apparel for the whole family.

Wings Over Water Festival

Wings over Water is an annual six-day festival held in November that is devoted to celebrating the wild side of the Outer Banks. The festival offers more than 100 programs in themes ranging from birding and wildlife photography to paddling, natural history and more! It’s a fun and educational event for the whole family, and since it takes place in the shoulder season, it’s an affordable time to come and enjoy the beauty of the Outer Banks.
