Need a meal that’s fresh and quick but way healthier than fast food? Cafe Lachine is a small Nags Head eatery that serves freshly prepared, delicious fare for breakfast, lunch and early dinner. Eat inside in their new dining area, enjoy your meal outside at the bistro tables or order take-out. The menu includes sandwiches on homemade bread, soups, salads and baked goods, including breakfast pastries, cookies, cupcakes and custom cakes. Breakfast features muffins, scones and pastries plus egg and meat sandwiches and wraps. Lunch and dinner sandwiches include wraps, a Cuban press, a crab cake sandwich, egg and chicken salad and more, and the side dishes are creative (think three-bean salad, tabbouleh and sweet potato fries along with more traditional offerings). Cafe Lachine is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. serving breakfast and lunch. They deliver lunch in Nags Head from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ask about the picnics to go and the box lunch specials. They are also open for full-service dinners Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m to 9 p.m. and serve beer and wine along with their diverse menu. This is a great place to pick up dessert, and they need only 24-hours’ notice for a specialty cake.
Catering is one of Cafe Lachine’s specialties. The owners, husband and wife team Johanna and Justin Lachine, are cooking school graduates, and they have a great deal of experience in catering events of all sizes. This year-round take-out deli features lunch and dinner selections including a variety of sumptuous specialty sandwiches as well as the basics like grilled cheeses and steak sandwiches. You’ll be surprised at how high they pile their sandwiches and subs. They have a good selection of bottled beverages and chips. Free delivery is available within a specific area; give them a call to find out if you’re in their delivery zone.

At Dune Burger you can enjoy fast food–style favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, French fries and ice cream. What could be better in the summertime? This is a to-go stop only, but they do have a few picnic tables outside if you’d like to eat it there. It’s right across the street from the new Jennette’s Pier. Dune Burger is open for lunch and dinner from March to Thanksgiving.

Visit the two Dunkin’ Donuts locations on the Bypass (or their new location in Corolla next to Food Lion) for coffee, breakfast/lunch sandwiches and, of course, donuts. They serve breakfast all day, and they’re open 24-hours in the summer for all your coffee and donut desires!

John’s Drive-In is famous for its milkshakes and free puppy cups — ice cream for our four-legged friends. Locals and tourists alike are addicted, making this a busy stop, but the speedy service moves things right along. The only thing that might take a while is choosing what kind of shake to have since they have a long list of flavors including fruit and other sweet choices. Try a combination like banana-peanut butter-chocolate, and you might not have room for lunch. But you’ll wish you did, with the fried mahi sandwiches and juicy hamburgers served here. Food is served to-go style, and there are several umbrella-shaded picnic tables. John’s is open every day but Wednesday from spring through fall.

This popular pizza chain has made a name for itself by using high-quality ingredients to make their pies. They offer all the favorite toppings, plus specialty pizzas like spinach alfredo and barbecue chicken and bacon. Also on the menu are side dishes like wings, cheese sticks and chicken strips. You can pick up an order at their Kitty Hawk location. Papa John’s delivers within Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills, and they are open for lunch and dinner.

Seaside Gourmet To Go serves great local seafood and ethnic-inspired, healthful cuisine. Every day they have vegan, vegetarian and seafood specials in addition to their regular menu. You can call the number above to hear about the day’s specials or check their website. Whenever possible, the chef uses local and organic produce. You’ll find some of the best seafood dishes on the beach at Seaside. As the name implies, this is a take-out stop only. However, they do offer catering services for events. Seaside Gourmet To Go is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mondays; 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; closed Saturday and Sunday.

The Snowbird boasts more than 24 flavors of soft-serve ice cream, which is a really popular feature with kids. Locals and vacationers love the burgers, sandwiches and seafood at this drive-up stop. The treats here are served to-go only, but there are a few picnic tables and seats if you want to eat here. One of the best things about this little spot is that it’s open until midnight during the summer — in case you just have to have that ice cream well after the hour you should!

This is a great Thai place that now has indoor seating. They are open for lunch and serve food all day through dinner. Experience their their yummy soups, pad thai, spring rolls and more. They have a few seats outside too, or you can order a take-out meal. Vilai Thai is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m.
