Captain George’s Seafood Restaurant

Captain George’s serves an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet with more than 70 items, including Alaskan snow crab legs, savory prime rib and fresh steamed shrimp. They offer made-to-order entree items and prepare everything in-house daily. Their Oysters Rockefeller is a secret family recipe that you won’t want to miss. Captain George’s is open for dinner every day except Christmas. On Sundays they begin serving at noon and offer a “first catch” discount until 4 p.m., with the exception of holidays. The buffet is half-price for children ages 5 through 12. Children ages 4 and younger can have the buffet for free. Just George’s Sports Bar and Grill is located inside Captain George’s and has a great menu and 28 flat-screen TVs. The kitchen stays open till the bar closes. Captain George’s is family owned and operated and is a proud member of The Outer Banks Catch serving local Carolina seafood.

Colington Café is located on Colington Road in a Victorian-style home. This is a great place for a special night out, and it has received accolades from Southern Living magazine. The chefs are skilled at preparing outstanding dishes with fresh, local ingredients. The Cafe is famous for its she-crab bisque and crab cakes. Nightly specials always offer a unique take on dishes such as local seafood or quality steaks. The homemade desserts are incredible and include a vanilla creme brulee, triple chocolate mousse cake and coconut cream pie. The wine list is reasonably priced. Large parties can be accommodated, and reservations are recommended. Colington Café is open for dinner from April through Thanksgiving and then reopens for the Christmas holidays.

Colington Pizza, voted Best Pizza of the Beach 2012 in a local poll, is a friendly, locally owned neighborhood restaurant on Colington Island. They offer homemade pizzas, appetizers, salads, sandwiches and subs, plus beer and wine at a spot that’s a popular Colington hangout and, with the NFL’s Thursday night and Sunday ticket, it’s also a great place to watch the game! Build your own pizza or try one of their gourmet and specialty pizzas. Eat in, take out or have it delivered; they deliver from Colington Harbour to Bermuda Bay on the east end of Colington Road. They’re open for dinner every night, year round. Look for Colington Pizza on Colington Road, a half-mile outside the entrance of Colington Harbour by the water tower.

Country Deli

For 24 years, this year-round take-out deli features lunch and dinner selections including a variety of sumptuous specialty sandwiches as well as the basics like grilled cheeses and steak sandwiches. You’ll be surprised at how high they pile their sandwiches and subs. They have a good selection of bottled beverages and chips. Free delivery is available within a specific area, including Nags Head beach accesses (which is only one reason this place is a favorite with Nags Head Ocean Rescue guards!); give them a call to find out if you’re in their delivery zone.

For more than 25 years, Dare Devil’s has been serving delicious pizzas, strombolis, subs, salads and appetizers. They have a full bar and TVs that are great for watching sports events. You can eat in or take it out. Dare Devil’s is open for dinner at 5 p.m. year round and serves lunch as well during the summer season.

Dunes Restaurant is a Nags Head tradition that’s been serving breakfast, lunch and dinner for 32 seasons. This popular take-out food and ice cream stand serves up an array of ice cream concoctions — shakes, sundaes, cones — as well as hand-pattied burgers, fresh grilled tuna, French fries, Hebrew National hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, onion rings, fresh-squeezed orange/lime/lemonades and more. Try their no-filler, all-killer jumbo crabcake! The ice cream is absolutely delectable, and you must try Stacie’s delicious ice cream cakes for special occasions. Fatboyz is located across the street from Jennette’s Pier, and you can eat on-site at a handful of tables on the side deck. Though the line is often long at this very popular spot, don’t despair; it moves very quickly.

Geared up for their third season, Outer Banks Pier has open-deck dining! A roof over the deck just to the side of the pier house shades bar-style seating all around the edge and tables in the center. They are serving hamburgers, fries, steamed shrimp and veggies, fish tacos (yum!) and more. Wine and beer are available, and they also have some breakfast sandwiches for the early birds and anglers. They’re open every day and often have live entertainment during the summer.

Five Guys serves up their famous burgers, hot dogs and, of course, French fries. You can add cheese and bacon to your burger and then choose from a variety of toppings like mushrooms, fried onions and pickles. The “famous fries” are hand-cut and served either Five Guys style or Cajun. This is a bright, clean place, and you can expect fast and friendly service.

Flying Fish Cafe features a Mediterranean-style menu with lots of coastal favorites. The Carolina crab cakes are exceptional, and several fish entrees are offered every evening. You select how it is prepared: grilled, sautéed or blackened. They also have beautiful preparations of all natural Angus Beef steaks like their seared Filet Mignon with Gorgonzola crust. The wine list is extensive, with 40 by-the-glass options and 200 bottles of reserve selections. They also have a full bar. Top off your meal with a choice from their cappuccino bar and one of their homemade desserts. Try their signature Chocolate Hurricane, a tower of chocolate five ways, wrapped in a cylinder of white and dark chocolate…heaven! Flying Fish is open for lunch daily from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and dinner nightly, year round. Reservations are recommended in season.

Food Dudes is a place that really is all about the food. With years of experience working in the best local kitchens, the Food Dudes are big on preparing the best food from the best seasonal ingredients. While the regular menu is simple enough to showcase the unique flavors of their food, their daily specials board really showcases their talents and the variety of options you’ll have to choose from. They feature vegetarian dishes, local seafood and organic and local produce from Currituck County farms whenever possible. You can dine in and enjoy beer and wine with your meal or get take-out. Food Dudes is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and offers a nice Sunday brunch and taco night on Thursdays. The owner says “drop in and dine any time at milepost nine.”

Front Porch Cafe

A community coffeehouse with deliciously fresh-roasted coffee, the Nags Head Front Porch features generous amounts of seating and parking and a lounge/art space to relax and enjoy your coffee and the hand-painted mural by local artist Dawn Gray. Front Porch is known for offering some of the best artisan-roasted coffee on the beach. They serve an array of specialty coffee drinks, teas and chai. Fresh pastries like croissants, muffins, cinnamon buns and turnovers are baked on site. In addition to the wide variety of whole bean coffees for sale, be sure to peruse the affordable wine selection. This is a great place to hang out — it’s open year round with free wireless Internet access, extended summer evening hours and a community bulletin board with local news and events. The Front Porch has two other locations, one in Kill Devil Hills at MP 6 and the other on the main highway in Manteo.

The Good Life Eatery occupies a beautiful space that is great for rehearsal dinners and private parties. With ample seating and a diverse menu, the dry bakery case is chock-full of delicious bagels, turnovers, cinnamon rolls, croissants and muffins. Take a look at their cold bakery case where there is something for everyone. Their menu features gourmet salads, sandwiches, wraps, paninis and homemade soups for lunch and dinner. Relax with a glass of house wine or mug of specialty coffee by the fireplace and waterfall. Check out the cold beer case with more than 100 varieties as well as a wide selection of wine for every palate. Custom catering is a big part of their operation. From 10-300 guests, Good Life can provide convenient catering both on and off the premises. Good Life is open seven days a week at 7 a.m. in season. You can get a full breakfast every day until 1 p.m. You should definitely try one of their featured breakfasts served in a personal frying pan. Free WiFi is available for customers.

Breakfast is available until 1 p.m. so if you get up late you won’t miss out on delicious, home-style choices like hot cakes, seafood omelets, and biscuits and gravy. There’s something for everyone on the lunch and dinner menu. Choose from seafood, burgers, sandwiches, salads or, if you’re a young one, the kids’ menu. Beer and wine are served. High Cotton BBQ

High Cotton is owned and operated by a native North Carolina family that was born and raised in the heart of barbecue country. They serve authentic, eastern North Carolina–style pork barbecue. The pork is smoked for hours over hickory, hand-chopped and then seasoned with a light, vinegar-based sauce that doesn’t overpower the natural flavor of the smoked meat. The Southern fried chicken is crisp and delicious. The smoked chicken is so tender it falls right off the bone, and the Texas-style beef brisket is smoked, sliced and served with a tangy sauce. The St. Louis cut ribs are the local’s favorite for good reason. Portions here are generous. They serve traditional side dishes like cole slaw, baked beans and fresh vegetables plus hush puppies and French fries. The sauces are homemade and available for purchase. They have a children’s menu. This is a great place to feed a crowd, and they have a speedy to-go counter for take-out. Check out their convenient to-go packages and bring home your own pig-pickin’. The restaurant also offers catering. High Cotton serves lunch and dinner every day in season and closes for a short time in the winter.

Hurricane Mo’s Beachside Bar and Grill

Hurricane Mo’s is just steps from the ocean and has an intimate, beachy atmosphere. On the menu you’ll find fresh seafood, steaks, chicken, pasta and sandwiches. Daily specials are offered at lunch and dinner. Kids will be happy with the selections on their children’s menu. They have a full bar and happy hour specials from 3 to 5 p.m., including 10-cent shrimp, 25-cent wings and $1 tacos. Hurricane Mo’s is open year round for lunch and dinner, and you can get take-out if you prefer. They offer free WiFi for customers to use. Check them out if you’re looking for fun. If you are after fun and sun, have a drink and bite to eat on their new outdoor covered deck overlooking the ocean.

I Got Your Crabs

If you like eating locally caught fresh blue crabs, this place is for you. Family-owned and operated, these Currituck crabbers bring the freshest catch straight from their boats to your table. Inside, there’s a total of 50 feet of stainless steel bar where you can dine or take home a bushel for the family. In addition to crabs, live or steamed, by the dozen, half or full bushel, they also serve whole and filleted fish such as white perch, croaker, spot, flounder and a great selection of other shellfish and fresh sides. Of course, tender filets of fresh local fish are also available. They can cook up crabs three different ways – plain, salted or seasoned. Island Snowball Company

Snowballs aren’t just for the kids at this fun tiki hut-themed shop. Choose from more than 50 mouth-watering homemade flavors poured over finely shaved ice, then pick your own toppings. They even offer sugar-free and dye-free choices. They also offer locally made, hand-dipped ice cream and homemade fudge. The little ones will like the shop’s chalkboard walls and bright colors, and the adults will enjoy seeing art from local artists. They are located in the Outer Banks Mall near Fresh Market.

Jimmy’s Seafood Buffet

Jimmy’s is a family destination offering a variety of Outer Banks seafood and more than 100 tempting dishes from both land and sea, including homemade soups and made-from-scratch desserts. When it comes to seafood, the owner says “size does matter,” so dig in to the largest crab legs and shrimp around town. Early birds get a free lobster tail with their adult buffet, and lobster claws are included in the buffet until 4 p.m. in season. Come right when Jimmy’s opens at 2:30 p.m. to enjoy all-you-can-eat lobster until 4 p.m. On Saturday nights, it’s all you can eat lobster night all night long! Jimmy’s also has many to-go options like fried platters, steamed dinners and the handy carry-out seafood buckets. The clambake-style seafood buckets make enjoying great, steamed seafood at home a snap. Jimmy’s even delivers right to your door, or you can call ahead for convenient curbside pick up. They open for dinner at 2:30 p.m in season and 4 p.m. in the off-season and have live nightly entertainment. While you’re waiting for a table, there are free pony rides for the kids, and you can play cornhole or putt-putt too.

JK’s

JK’s is famous for its steaks and fresh seafood, all cooked over a mesquite wood grill. The steaks are of exceptional quality and are prepared by their in-house butcher. They have several cuts of steak on the menu, and many steak dinners are complemented with fresh local seafood. All entrees are served with the fresh vegetable of the day and either rice pilaf or their perfect mashed potatoes. Top off your meal with a homemade dessert. JK’s is a very consistent restaurant with high-quality fare. They have a full bar and serve cocktails, wine and beer. JK’s is open year round for dinner 5 to 10 p.m. in the summer season and closed Sundays during November and December.
