Longboards is a casual dining spot for lunch and dinner. Choose from seafood, chicken, pasta, pizza, sandwiches and salads. They offer their full menu nightly until 1 a.m. Two different daily happy hours get you half-priced appetizers—the first is from 4 to 6 p.m. and the second is from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. This is also a great nightspot with live entertainment, several pool tables, games and a large bar. They are open year round.

This neighborhood tavern serves quality food at great prices. Lucky 12 has fresh local seafood, hand-pattied burgers, great New York–style pizza, authentic Buffalo chicken wings and Boardwalk Fries. Everything is fresh and well prepared, and the chef creates tasty daily specials. There’s a menu for kids. The dining room is open for lunch and dinner every day. The bar is a popular late-night hangout, with DJs spinning tunes often during the summer. You can order pizza until 2 a.m. The bartenders mix up Bushwhackers, delicious frozen cocktails, using the recipe from Quagmires (a now-closed and missed oceanfront restaurant). Lucky 12 also has 20 beers on tap and a martini menu. For entertainment there is a pool table, pinball machine and sports on TV, including the popular NFL Sunday ticket. Lucky 12 also features an outdoor patio with TVs. There is never a cover charge. Lucky 12 is open year round.

Mama Kwan’s serves delicious, local Outer Banks seafood with flavors from the Pacific Rim. The chef whips up specials every day, and there are lots of tempting dishes on the menu. Try the fish tacos or pepper-seared tuna dinner — sushi-grade tuna served rare with wasabi, soy sauce, rice and cucumber salad. The unique flavors of the Special Occasion Pasta make it a menu favorite. Mama Kwan’s has a full bar, and you can enjoy a specialty drink in their novelty glassware. The whole family will enjoy the fun, tiki-bar atmosphere of this restaurant. Kids love to eat here. Mama Kwan’s serves lunch and dinner every day year round and a special late-night menu on Friday and Saturday nights. They also have entertainment on certain nights most of the year. As with many local hangouts, they are closed for a few weeks early each winter season, but the exact time may vary. The sign outside always lets you know what is going on at Mama’s.

Pizza to the Max! Max’s delicious pizzas come in three sizes, a 9” personal pan pizza as well as the traditional medium and large sizes, all made with their signature hand-tossed crust. Choose from a wide variety of toppings, including grilled all-white meat chicken, pepperoni, ground beef, Italian sausage, ham, bacon, meatballs, mushrooms, salami, onions, green peppers, black olives, spinach, Roma tomatoes, pineapple, feta cheese, banana peppers and jalapeno peppers. Also featured are Italian favorites such as calzones and strombolis. Looking for something different? Try Max’s fresh pressed paninis or one of their hot and tasty oven-baked subs. At Max’s you’ll find 14 varieties of fresh-baked bagels and lots of homemade spreads. They also have fresh-cooked breakfast sandwiches with eggs and meats. For lunch, choose from a full line of deli sandwiches, made with quality Thumann’s meats and cheeses. You can eat in or take it out. Max’s is open every day for breakfast and lunch but is closed for the month of January.

With a nod toward the Grateful Dead, this local cantina promises a “Gratefully Good Time,” and they deliver! Created by the owners of Mama Kwan’s, MexiCali Brewz serves up classic southern California/Mexican cuisine like fish tacos and burritos and also a cool spin on some local dishes. Their marinated mahi mahi is excellent. They have a colorful and fun kid-friendly atmosphere, but their late-night menu and outdoor entertainment in season is a big hit with the party crowd. As one local said, “It’s like playland for grown-ups.” Check out them out!

Miller’s is a family-owned and operated tradition that began in 1978 and is being carried on by a second generation. Breakfast at Miller’s includes a big menu of favorites like homemade buttermilk biscuits, three-egg omelets and a never-ending cup of coffee. Dinner specialties feature Miller’s famous made-from-scratch hush puppies, local seafood, Angus beef and pastas. Miller’s has a children’s menu and a full bar. The restaurant is closed from December through February.

New for Epicurean 2012 is partnering with Kitty Hawk Kayaks and Coastal Provisions Market to present a unique culinary adventure – Blue Crab, Kayak and Cook offered on Wednesdays from June through August.

Outer Banks Restaurant Tours offers walking and driving tours to some of the finest restaurants in the Outer Banks. These tours offer participants a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet restauranteurs and chefs, to learn about what makes each restaurant unique and to taste signature dishes paired with a sampling of wine or beer. Each tour is comprised of three or more restaurants that are in close geographic proximity to each other. Most of their tours are walking tours, but for others the participants will be transported from restaurant to restaurant. Tours run from Memorial Day through Labor Day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays and prices range from $45 to $60 per person. So, for the price of a dinner at one restaurant you have the opportunity to sample the offerings at three or four! Their website has more information about the specific restaurants and times. Whichever you choose, you will be delighted—just be sure to bring your appetite!

The Outer Banks Taco Bar is an authentic Mexican taco bar with lots of fresh flavors, all made from scratch. You can get lunch and dinner here as they are open daily from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights, they stay open later.

The owners of the Pier house Restaurant have made a great thing even better. They have added a third seating area, outside on the pier deck, with full service for drinks and food. Colorful tables and friendly service make this a great way to enjoy this oceanfront atmosphere. In addition, the famous porch over the water now has air-conditioning just like the regular dining room. Whether you want to sit inside or out, enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner selections including fresh steamed seafood, fried seafood sandwiches, steaks and chicken served up with optional sides such as cole slaw, hush puppies and fries. They’ll even cook your own catch if you like. They have a full bar and serve cocktails, wine and beer. The Pier House is open daily April through November with dinner served through mid-October.

There’s an extensive childrens’ menu, large parties are welcome and reservations are accepted. Port O’ Call serves dinner nightly, and everyone should ask about the chef specials. The restaurant is known for its holiday buffets. They are also available for special events such as weddings, rehearsal dinners, reunions, fraternity and sorority parties as well as office and holiday parties that can be planned as sit-down dinners or buffets. In the gift shop you’ll find a large collection of fashion and fine jewelry.

Upstairs you’ll find an authentic surf bar with a brand new, super large, ocean view deck where you’ll find live music in season. This is a great family-friendly restaurant since the menu is very affordable and there are lots of choices for kids. Rundown serves lunch and dinner seven days a week in the summer. You can also order take-out here. They are closed from the end of November until March 1.
