Shopping in Kitty Hawk is an experience, not just something to do on a rainy day. Everyone can find something special with the choices of locally owned and interesting shops in town. Whether you’re looking for homemade dog biscuits, local artwork, funky clothing and accessories, beach souvenirs or fishing tackle, you can find it all within Kitty Hawk. Note that, as you enter the Outer Banks from the north over the bridge from Currituck, all the shops on the right-hand side of the road (the side with the Home Depot) are in Kitty Hawk, while those on the left are in Southern Shores. Remember that locals call Croatan Highway—aka U.S. Highway 158—The Bypass, and they refer to Virginia Dare Trail—aka N.C. Highway 12—as the Beach Road. Those simple names are just easier to remember!

Ace Hardware sells everything for the home, garden and yard. Most people know Ace as a traditional hardware store, a place to find tools, paint, hardware and lawn and garden supplies. But you may not know that they also sell deck furniture, cleaning supplies, kitchen items, bathroom accessories, beach goods, pet supplies, holiday decorations, fishing tackle, grills, gifts, home accessories, art supplies, Carhartt clothing and much more. Gray’s has been a trusted name in apparel for the whole family since 1948. This family owned and operated local chain boasts the largest selection of Tommy Bahama clothing on the Outer Banks and also sells popular brands like Under Armour, Champion, Gear For Sports, Billabong, Fresh Produce Sportswear, Eliza B. sandals and belts, Woolrich and Columbia. Gray’s also carries a great selection of gifts, jewelry and accessories, including Vera Bradley. This store is located just over the Wright Memorial Bridge in Point Harbor. It’s a great place to pick out a special bottle of wine or build-your-own six-pack of microbrew beer. Their staff is friendly and knowledgable, and you can participate in Daily, Weekly, Grand Reserve and Private tastings. They specialize in boutique wine selections from around the world. They also have gourmet food items and an interesting selection of wine-related gifts. They also co-host annual wine tasting events at their Point Harbor location. Call for details.

The Wine Specialist is, obviously, a wine shop offering a variety of high-end and low-end wines that all meet the high standards of the owners, who have a wealth of experience in the wine industry. In addition to wine, they offer a great selection of beers, cheese, pates and sausages. They offer free delivery from Manteo to Duck (with a minimum purchase of $25). Free wine tastings are held every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

A bit of a change from the traditional surf/skate shop, this shop has more of a boutique feel with clean aesthetics and a simple, modern, minimalist style. Their concept is to bring together the best part of street wear and the best part of surf and skate retail to create a unique experience here on the Outer Banks, and they have succeeded. They research and offer emerging brands you won’t often find on the Outer Banks or even eastern Carolina, so if you like cutting edge style, this is your place. You’ll also find a huge skate, bodyboard and surfboard selection, and they offer two-week turnaround on custom surfboards and 24-hour surfboard ding repair. They also offer full rental and lesson services in skate and surf. And right next door is the only indoor skatepark on the OBX, with a 20-foot-wide and 4-foot-tall halfpipe with a 10-foot vert wall. Active in the community, they sponsor skate contests year round.

Betsy and Brewster have a great little antique store filled with an eclectic collection of antiques, furniture, objects d’art and other interesting items—like their stuffed peacock. Central Garden Center is a family-owned and operated business that has been serving the beach for more than 40 years. They offer plants for all seasons and are very knowledgeable about those that are best suited to the harsh beach environment. You’ll also find beach grasses, some tropical plants and mulch. Pick out a piece of driftwood from their collection to bring a little of the beach to your garden back home. They also have concrete statuary, and they offer landscaping services.
