Note that, as you enter the Outer Banks from the north over the bridge from Currituck, all the shops on the right-hand side of the road (the side with the Home Depot) are in Kitty Hawk, while those on the left are in Southern Shores. Remember that locals call Croatan Highway—aka U.S. Highway 158—The Bypass, and they refer to Virginia Dare Trail—aka N.C. Highway 12—as the Beach Road. Those simple names are just easier to remember!

Hotline is the local women’s shelter and crisis intervention/prevention center, and the Thrift Shop is one of the ways it raises money. The Kitty Hawk location (there are seven throughout the region) is easy to find with its bright pink building. If you love hunting through thrift stores, you’ll go crazy for this one. Wave Riding Vehicles has been on the beach since 1980, and in that time their wave of porpoises logo has made their surfboards one of the most recognizable on the East Coast. The shop is huge, with equipment for all the board sports: surfing, bodyboarding, skimboarding, snowboarding and skateboarding. They offer surfboard rentals and a full line of surfboard repairs. In clothing, WRV carries top name brands as well as plenty of unusual and hard-to-find labels. The women’s section in particular is full of boutique choices of clothing and accessories.
