Fine-art photographer Matthew S. Gibson specializes in scenic landscape photography of the Outer Banks. He shows and sells his work at his gallery in Nags Head, which is in the famous Gallery Row section of town. In the summer and fall, Gibson offers weekly wine and cheese tastings in the gallery on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m. This is a great time to talk with Gibson about his work. Gibson also operates the Outer Banks Photography School, offering a wide range of classes from single-day introductions to week-long intensives. This is a well-loved local gallery, and the owners are known for their generosity to the Outer Banks arts community. The main gallery features work by printmaker and painter Glenn Eure. Subjects vary from boat watercolors to abstract collagraph prints and large three-dimensional canvases. Side galleries include revolving shows by emerging and mature artists and group exhibitions such as the annual self-portrait competition. The gallery also hosts poetry readings.

Designing in platinum, gold and silver, Gail Kowalski is a local artist whose work with natural, fancy-colored diamonds and other precious gems has won her national recognition. This Gallery Row shop offers a mix of attractive and reasonably priced jewelry made from semi-precious stones and silver, including creative wire-wrapped and broken china jewelry made by a local artist. The owner, Chris, travels to find small companies and individual artists to represent in the shop, so you’ll find items here that you won’t likely see elsewhere. She features more than 200 artists in the shop, and it’s filled with unusual finds such as whimsical garden figurines, wind chimes, typewriter key earrings, Twilight series and recycled button jewelry, dog treats and retro candy.

Morales Art Gallery showcases the original art of local, regional and nationally known artists. Subjects include seascapes, wildlife and figurative work.
