One of the oldest surf shops on the Outer Banks, Cavalier is a family-run operation and is known for providing good customer service in sales and rentals. You can buy or rent hard or soft-top surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards and wetsuits. They have a full line of clothing for boys, men and women including beachwear, sportswear, swimwear and sandals. A great new addition to the Outer Banks, this fun toy store is dedicated to finding creative, fun and high-quality toys that you won’t find anywhere else. Their play room gives kids some hands-on time with a train set, doll house and kitchen while also giving parents time to shop or chat. The store is packed with cool stuff and has everything from art supplies to stuffed animals, games, jump ropes, puzzles and all the coolest fun and educational toys kids actually want, including the Klutz series. You can also find craft supplies and other items from Alex, Learning Resources and the popular Melissa & Doug line. Pirates & Pixies has a Jelly Belly jelly bean wall, but watch out for Clarence, their resident dragon — he’s a little protective of the stash!

This vintage, family-owned grocery store offers fresh meats, a great selection of fine wines and a variety of groceries. They have gourmet cheeses and pates, homegrown vegetables, herbs, spices, sauces and marinades. Cahoon’s offers great homemade sandwich fixings (tuna salad, chicken salad, pimento cheese) that are easy to pick up on your way to the beach, along with all the chips, beer, sodas and snacks you could possibly need. While you’re here, pick up fishing tackle and souvenirs. They really have it all! It’s located next to Jennette’s Pier.

Family-owned and operated, they have custom boards hand-shaped by Tom Neilson, plus custom board fins, and they also rent boards and do surf lessons. Not a surfer but love the waves? You’ll find boogie boards and skim boards too. They sell clothing and swimsuits from Lucy Love, Body Glove and Synergy. You’ll find great handmade Island sandals from Hawaii, teak tables and chairs, tie-dye items, custom-designed T-shirts, Himalyan rock salt lamps and lots of gifts for all your friends back home. Did we mention the ice cream? Try 48 amazing hand-dipped flavors in cups, cones, sundaes, banana splits, shakes or floats. They even make their own rootbeer.

Seaside Art Gallery

Art lovers and collectors must stop in Seaside and wander through the 13 rooms of incredible fine art and other treasures. The Smith family opened the gallery in 1961 and still operates Seaside today in its original location. The gallery showcases 2,000 original works by local and world-renowned artists, including original work from masters such as Picasso and Rembrandt as well as coastal paintings, fine art prints, sculpture, pottery, porcelains, Mexican silver jewelry, Hummel figurines and animation art by Disney and Warner Brothers. The owner is a fine art and animation art accredited appraiser. Seaside also has a fine estate jewelry collection. Seaside hosts several exciting art shows annually, including the International Miniature Art Show and artist demonstration shows.
